Minnesota welcomes Claes Hammar, Minister for Trade and Economic Affairs with the Swedish Embassy in Washington, D.C.

As current President of the European Union (July 1, 2009 - December 31, 2009), Sweden has a unique opportunity to place its mark on business, economic, and environmental policies and priorities within the European Union as well as in relation to the United States. For this reason, Mr. Hammar’s visit to Minnesota is especially timely and important for Minnesota businesses, entrepreneurs, and policymakers.

Among Sweden’s stated priorities for its EU presidency are managing and growing out of the global economic crisis and pressing forward Swedish/EU policies and interests in the coming international climate agreement negotiations to be held in December in Copenhagen, Denmark. These priorities and the significant opportunities and challenges with which they present Minnesota businesses and policymakers will be the central themes of the days’ events and discussions.

Three different events with Mr. Hammar will be hosted on Aug. 27-28, 2009 as described below:

August 27, 2009 – Luncheon – 11:00–1:00 - Dorsey & Whitney, LLP, 50th South Sixth Street, Minneapolis, MN, 15th Floor.

Opening Presentation: Claes Hammar, Minnesota and Sweden: Partners in Developing and Transferring Green Technologies

Mr. Hammar will offer insight into how, in our otherwise troubled global economy, Sweden’s world-leading clean-energy technologies and productive innovation system present opportunities for economic growth for Minnesota’s own leading businesses.

Panel Discussion: A panel of business, entrepreneurial, and trade leaders, together with Mr. Hammar, will discuss how these common needs and common advantages will play out in the future in concrete, bottom-line terms for Minnesota’s businesses, entrepreneurs, and researchers. The panel will include:

-          Hon. R.T. Rybak, Mayor of the City of Minneapolis, Minneapolis, MN

-          Tony Lorusso, Executive Director of the Minnesota Trade Office, St. Paul, MN

-          Anders Rydåker President/CEO, Evergreen Energy, LLC and President, District Energy, St. Paul, MN

-          Per Carlsson, Co-Founder of the Scandinavian Cleantech Export Association and President/CEO of Abionova AB, Stenkullen, Sweden

August 28, 2009 – Breakfast – 8:00–10:00 AM (7:30 AM Registration) – Windows on Minnesota/IDS Tower, 710 Marquette Avenue, Minneapolis, MN

Opening Presentation: Claes Hammar, EU Presidency Goals for the Green Transition

Mr. Hammar will discuss the European Union’s policy goals and their implications for creating Swedish and EU innovation, entrepreneurship, and trade in the area of “Green Commerce” while connecting the results with American partners.

Panel Discussion: Trade and Policy: The Framework for Making Business Possible

A panel of leaders from Minnesota public/private institutions will discuss public policy tools, strategies, and pitfalls capable of opening and closing doors globally for entrepreneurs, researchers, and businesses. The panel will include:

-          Rep. Laura Brod, Assistant Minority Leader, Minnesota State House of Representatives

-          Sen. Steve Kelley, former Minnesota State Senator and present candidate for governor

-          Rep. Jeremy Kalin, Member, Minnesota House of Representatives and Co-Chair of Minnesota Green Jobs Taskforce
